If you went, or had gone to school, in - the communist era -
People's Republic of Poland on the 8th of March, you would be, or would have
been, most likely to be walking to school carrying a single carnation on a long
stem. The flower would be trimmed with a sprig of asparagus ( please see:
http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Starr_050517-1468_Asparagus_setaceus.jpg so
you didn't visualise an asparagus shoot!) attached with a thin ribbon to the
long stem of the flower and intertwining with it; all the assemble
protected by cello bouquet wrapping fastened firmly with a lot of pins. There
was an option: a gift-wrapped chocolate bar, sometimes both or a box of
chocolates, three carnations, roses or tulips.
The pins I remember, because I often had to unwrap the flowers
when my mother brought them home. She taught to small children and they loved
her. Even now, when these sometimes well middle age adults see her in the
street, they come up and say hello and how wonderful a teacher she was, often
their favourite one ever.
