Through Końskie last Thursday

Thursday is cloudy and rainy in London. A week ago I was on a coach from Skarzysko to Łódź taking pictures through the window enjoying the winter sun. I'll share with you the next portion of these pictures showing the next leg of the journey: a drive through an old market town of Końskie.

Coming from Skarżysko-Kamienna by road you enter Konskie driving through the tracks of  an over a hundred - year - old railroad connecting  Łódź Kaliska, Skarżysko and Dębica. This is how I travelled to my grandparents who lived in the country. The carriages were pulled by a steam engine and very slow. We joked that at times you could get off in the forest on the way, pick up some wild mushroom and still hop on in again. That was an exaggeration! My little brother used to push the handrail  believing that it would speed up the train. :-)

A school in Końskie where my father worked as a PE teacher in the early 1960s:

The remains of The Tarnowskis', and originally Małachowskis', residence in the  Końskie Park. The main building was never built.

The edifice would stand proudly in the middle, respectively overlooking the courtyard and the park:

The last Polish king, Stanisław August Poniatowski visited this residence. In the second week of the Second World War Hitler stayed here. Wikipedia says:

'Końskie was briefly visited by Adolf Hitler on September 10, 1939 while on the way to Kielce after landing on an airfield nearby. His car cavalcade visited the headquarters of General Walther von Reichenau at the local mansion. Hitler was followed by director Leni Riefenstahl who came a day later, ordered to film the Nazi German victory over Poland. Reportedly, she fainted when witnessing the random killing of two dozen Jews summoned to dig graves on September 12, 1939.'

You can follow this link if you want to learn more about those days.

St Nicholas church:

For many years coaches would stop at the coach station next to the rail station. Now people wait at the bus stop by the park:

These buildings enjoy the park view:

Although it's time consuming, I do enjoy a drive through the towns and villages en route. It's so boring on the motorway.

Old style department store on Końskie:

A street leading towards Warsaw, if you drive lfor long enough! I remember a fantastic bakery down there on the corner. How amazing bread and rolls you could get there! Mmmm...

Leaving Końskie you can enjoy the far reaching view of the central Poland countryside:
